Tie a Scarf

How do you wear a scarf? Well, it’s first worth noting that there is no right or wrong way to wear your scarf. From the traditional to the quirky, there’s many different ways to style a scarf, more than we could fit into one piece in fact, but we’ll guide you through 6 of our favourites to give you some inspiration.

1. LET IT DRAPE

If you ever wonder how to wear a scarf, let it drape. An obvious but effortless choice. Drape the scarf around your neck and let the ends hang freely.

2. OVER THE SHOULDER

Start with the drape as above, but then toss one end, or both, over the opposite shoulder. European-inspired nonchalance at its finest.

3. LOOP IT AROUND

A classic done well. Loop one end of the scarf around your neck once or twice (depending on the size), leaving the ends to hang.

4. THE SHRUG

Drape the scarf loosely over your shoulders and secure with a knot at the front. Elevated and oh-so-classy. In the summer a classic pashmina delivers this look well, while in the winter a checked scarf achieves it too.

5. IN THE HAIR

Guaranteed good hair days. With multiple choices. Tie your hair into a ponytail or bun and wrap the scarf around and secure with a knot or tie into a bow. For a headband-style, roll the scarf, twist it, and place it across your forehead, securing the ends at the back for a cool, effortless look.

6. NECKERCHIEF

Roll the scarf up, tie it around the neck and secure it with a knot. It’s as simple as that. For a traditional ‘cowboy’-style neckerchief, fold into a triangle and tie the ends around the back of the neck.

SILK SCARVES

While they require a little more investment upfront, a silk scarf is one of those pieces you’ll never regret incorporating into your wardrobe. Both luxurious and enduring, they’ll become a favourite for a long time.

So, how do you wear a silk scarf? It will largely depend on the size and length of the scarf you’re working with. Naturally, a small silk scarf lends itself to be worn in the hair or as a neckerchief, while long silk scarves offer more choice - around the neck, over the shoulders, or even as a top or beach cover-up.

The beauty of silk scarves is that they are seasonless, making their investment even more worthwhile. When it comes to incorporating one into your summer outfits, choose a scarf that uses brighter colours that speak to the season, then offset them against one of our ladies’ white linen blouses or even sweater vests and jackets. In the winter they can provide a light layer of warmth too, when worn with a wool blazer or coat.

OVERSIZED AND LONG SCARVES

They say size doesn’t matter. But when it comes to styling your scarf, it kind of does. Longer and oversized scarves ultimately mean you have more fabric to play with and therefore more fun ways to style it. Sometimes called a blanket scarf due to the size, they are a more popular choice in the colder weather - as more fabric also means more warmth to bundle into.

So, how do you wear a large scarf? When the aim is to generate ultimate warmth, the ‘shrug’ or ‘loop around’ technique detailed above is most effective. A trend that was seen in AW24 and that we predict is likely to reappear in AW25 too is the ‘scarf hood’. Everyone was using their blanket scarves to their maximum effect by first using the classic ‘loop around’ technique, then pulling the back of the scarf over their head to create a chic hood/scarf hybrid.

As large scarves are often the last thing you add to an outfit in the winter, it’s worth considering the colour and fabric. Opt for a neutral or classic check to ensure it looks good with whatever coat you’re sporting and invest in cashmere, wool or wool blends to ensure it remains a favourite for a long time. These styles pair perfectly with our collection of knitted vests or cardigans to lock in the warmth, especially when layered under our women’s coats, during chillier months.

SQUARE SCARVES

Smaller styles, like square scarves make for more of an understated look and are often more effective in the hair or worn as a neckerchief. An ever-versatile accessory, there are many different ways to wear your scarf. You can fold it into a triangle and tie it as a headscarf or wrap it around your neck as a neckerchief.

For a more elegant look, it can be draped over your shoulders or worn as a hair accessory, such as a headband or bun wrap. Whether you’re aiming for casual, chic, or formal, a square scarf will add a pop of color and texture to any outfit.

When it comes to what to wear your square scarf with, the options are endless. A striped shirt or breton top will add contrast against a printed scarf. Tying the scarf around the collar of the shirt, layered over a sweater vest, will create a preppy, tie-effect. For a more sophisticated outfit, a square scarf looks great teamed with a v-neck jumper, a frill blouse and a pair of wide leg palazzo jeans.
