About The Just Slate Company
The Just Slate Co natural slate gifts are handmade by local craftsmen in their premises just a wee bit north of Edinburgh in Fife, Scotland. Originally started by mother and son duo Louise & Donny Carstairs, the rest of the family have joined the business over the years to help it grow further. Sister Emma is from a graphics background and now heads up the Product Design team and brother Colin uses his manufacturing background to assist him in heading up Production. Dad Ian looks after international sourcing and shipping (but can often be found relaxing on the golf course along in the East Neuk of Fife - the home of golf!). Even Rebus, the family dog, makes an appearance most days and is in charge of the security division (apart from when he is busy eating biscuits given to him by the postie!).
Although best known for hand-cut slate serving boards, the team work hard to refresh the collections each season to bring a variety of complimentary accessories including cheese knives, serving accessories and barware from artisan factories around the world. Recently refreshed with contemporary etched designs, hand drawn by Emma, such as the Majestic Scottish Stag, and the Hairy Highland Coo, the Just Slate brand continues to go from strength to strength.
After experiencing great success with her contemporary etched slate Emma experimented with different materials and introduced her Scottish Made products. The collection is still hand-cut at HQ but, instead of slate, it utilises Oak sourced just a few miles along the road. The solid oak is grown by a local charity that aims to harness the beautiful raw materials growing in the Scottish countryside woodlands whilst providing local employment under its sustainable felling and replanting project. The oak is then oiled by hand and laser engraved with one of the beautiful country inspired designs and hand-tied with a ribbon ready for gifting!
