But with practicality, level of protection, and style to consider, finding your perfect raincoat can be a little tricky. So, we've put together a guide to help you choose the right one and shed light on some technical terms.

THE SCIENCE OF STAYING DRY

DOES WATER RESISTANT MEAN WATERPROOF?

The short answer is no. The difference is determined by how much water a garment can withstand before it penetrates the fabric...

Water resistant: Repels water for a short period, but not entirely.

Waterproof: Waterproof jackets with taped seams create a complete barrier to water and are able to withstand heavy rainfall.

WHAT ARE TAPED SEAMS?

Taped seams are necessary to make a coat fully waterproof...

When a coat is sewn, it leaves small stitching holes. Tape is applied to the inside seams to seal these holes.

"Critically taped seams" means only the main seams (hood, neck, shoulders) are sealed, which does not make the garment fully waterproof.

WHAT IS A STORM FLAP?

A storm flap is a layer of fabric often found on the back of raincoats...

As well as adding structure and style, it also acts as a shield, allowing water to run off the flap and away from the back of the coat.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT RAINCOAT

LEVEL OF PROTECTION:

With water resistant and waterproof options to choose from, you first need to decide on the level of protection you require from your raincoat. If you’re looking for a coat that you can throw on for dashing around town then a water resistant coat ticks the box. But if you’re planning day-long walks in the country, then a waterproof coat with fully taped seams should be top of the list.

PRACTICAL FEATURES:

Look out for the practical details of a coat. These could include a detachable hood, storm flaps, storm cuffs, pockets, an adjustable hem, a breathable mesh lining and many more. The more of these that have been included in a coat the better. It demonstrates that great care and consideration has been taken to create the best possible garment.
