What To Wear to the Rugby

Combining camaraderie and resilience with off-the-seat action, rugby is tightly woven into British culture. So naturally the return of the Six Nations has brought fresh excitement to the start of the sporting calendar. And hopes are, as they always are, pinned on England to come out on top.

Whether you’re watching the sport in the stands at Twickenham, at the village local or even supporting upcoming playing stars at a grassroots level, we’ve got you covered with what to wear to a rugby game.

Men's Match Day Rugby Outfits

With three generations of the Joule family playing for Market Harborough Rugby Club and a long-running sponsorship, rugby is part of our heritage. We love both the game and the way in which it has influenced fashion through the decades too.

Our rugby shirts for men are made from rugged cotton jersey and carry hallmark details such as a pointed twill collar, concealed button placket and iconic horizontal stripes. So, when pondering what to wear to a rugby match, our rugby shirts will fit in… and stand out.

As you’ll be sitting or standing for at least 80 minutes, layering is the aim of the game. Wear your stripes under one of our men’s quarter zip sweatshirts and for extra warmth in those notoriously draughty stands finish the look with a men’s quilted jacket. If the weather is fairer, or you’re hosting your own viewer gathering at home (be sure to read our ‘how to throw a six nations party’ piece if you are), factor in a polo shirt. Don’t be afraid to layer-up different sporting styles - all’s fair in love and sport.

For any outing to the rugby, pub, pitch or otherwise, you’ll certainly want to be comfortable. On your bottom half opt for jeans that make the perfect pairing with rugby shirts or classic chinos to achieve a more preppy look. Finish with a pair of trainers or boots as you’ll be on your feet a lot.

Women's Match Day Rugby Outfits

From a bracing Sunday morning spurring on your little superstars from the touchline, to getting stuck into the game (and a beer) at the pub, a look which carries sporty style and feminine touches, will be a winning outfit for a rugby match.

Putting together a rugby outfit for ladies is all about choosing the right fabrics, fit and finishing touches. Use our women’s rugby shirts as the starting point and build a look around it. Just like our men’s styles, they are cut from heavyweight cotton making them both warm and durable. They carry the same signature sporty touches such as a button placket and twill collar, but embrace femininity through the softer colour palettes, flattering dropped hem and contrasting printed trims.

Add more dimension to your rugby shirt styling by considering your layers. Wearing a striped top underneath will not only dial up the warmth of the look but will also allow you to strip-down to a stylish base if you’re sheltered in the pub. A women’s sweatshirt featuring rugby-inspired embroideries or badging is a great piece to throw over the top or drape over the shoulders too.

With much of the rugby season hosted in the colder months, a gilet or jacket (or maybe even both) are non-negotiable. And as it’s the last layer, make it a good one. Both our women’s gilets and ladies’ quilted jackets range from lightweight to heavier padded styles, so you can choose your level of warmth. If the sidelines are a little (or a lot) soggy, then a raincoat is just the ticket for what to wear on a rainy day watching the rugby.

While most of the rugby-inspired styling is going to sit on the top half of the outfit, that doesn’t mean the bottom half has to be boring. Jeans or leggings are always a solid option, but a pair of wide leg or  straight leg ladies corduroy trousers will elevate the ensemble and earn you serious style points.

Kids' Match Day Rugby Outfits

Whether they’re playing as part of the school team, practising their touchdowns in the garden or cheering on their favourite team from the stands, we’ve got everything to kit out your little rugby-fan’s wardrobe.

Drawing inspiration from the grown ups, our boys’ rugby shirts and sweatshirts are in a (playing)field of their own and can be worn on or off the pitch thanks to their durable cotton fabrics, sturdy construction and traditional features. In an array of stripes, harlequin patterns, colours and embroideries they lend themselves easily to unisex dressing.

To ensure they stay warm while looking cool for match day and everyday, layering a girls’ polo shirt underneath is an easy way to add another sporty touch to their look. Style with a boys’ gilet or a girls’ gilets when the weather is somewhat fairer or a padded coat for when the action unfolds on the coldest of days.

Finish off their game-ready outfit with a pair of boys’ cord trousers as they’re not only comfy but they’re hardy enough to withstand all those inevitable grass stains. Opting for wide-leg cargo trousers will give the overall sporty look a stylish flair.

What To Wear to Rugby Hospitality

If you’ve scored yourself tickets to rugby hospitality then the best seats in the house deserve a well-considered outfit.

Most rugby hospitality carries a smart casual dress code as standard, with team rugby shirts welcomed. But, we’d always suggest erring on the side of smart, if only to welcome the opportunity to dress up a tad.

When it comes to choosing smarter attire, a well-made men’s wool suit is well worth the investment, and will see you through not only rugby hospitality, but for all manner of formal occasions. Ours are crafted from 100% wool and come in two or three piece options. Alternatively, opting for a men’s shirt and a pair of well-cut chinos is an easy way to pull-off a smart casual dress code.

When it comes to women’s styling, a smarter look for rugby hospitality is arguably easier to achieve. The simplest of outfits can be elevated to the extraordinary with the addition of an elegant silk accessory, handbag or hair style. While the ‘trousers and a nice top’ trend certainly has a place in rugby hospitality, choosing a long sleeve maxi dress will ensure you tick the smart casual box. And then some.

If you do decide to opt for less formal attire, then be mindful of how you interpret ‘casual’, as scruffy trainers or ripped jeans are often deemed inappropriate. Try a coloured pair of chinos with a rugby shirt and finish with a well cut blazer.

However and whoever you’re supporting this Six Nations, do it in style. Shop our full men’s, women’s and kids’ collections at joules.
