Rain boots! Yes, our good friends across the pond in America call the humble welly a rain boot. It is a much more literal way to call them, as they are boots that protect you from the rain. Of course, being British, we have lots of unusual words and phrases in our language, and we think welly is a fantastic addition to our vocabulary.
You will be thrilled to know that it is pretty simple to clean your wellies. Simply grab a cloth and a bowl of soapy water and give them a good scrub, leaving them to air dry naturally so they do not lose their shape. All brands will make their wellies in a slightly different way and recommend different cleaning routines, so we recommend checking the advice out first. For a more detailed way to clean your Joules wellies, our Welly Care Guide has all the information you could ever need.
Most people like to use a pair of thick socks to keep their feet warm in wellies, but we came up with our own solution at Joules – the welly liner! These fleecy socks are designed to sit snugly inside your wellies and keep your feet warm and comfortable, no matter what the weather is planning to throw at you.
The welly, or wellington boot if we are to use its full title, is a type of footwear originally used as military riding boots. Today they are used as a waterproof rubber boot and are perfect for walking on wet or muddy ground to protect from nasty splashes and puddles!
Wellies should fit so that your feet do not slip out of them. If you are wearing them on muddy ground, it is important that they fit properly: too loose and your feet could come out, too tight and they will not be comfortable enough for you to enjoy wearing. Remember that you would normally be wearing thick socks with your wellies, so either try them on with a pair or allow extra room for them.
Wellies are usually made either from rubber or manmade PVC. Joules wellies are made from a beautiful natural rubber which is then transformed into the wellies you know and love, with their gorgeous in-house designed prints and thoughtful details you have come to expect from Joules.
If your wellies have seen better days, we know it can be difficult to say goodbye to your favourite pair. While repairing them is an option, it is likely that any tears or rips will have compromised how waterproof they will be in future. A quick internet search has lots of fun ideas so you do not have to throw them away repurposing your old wellies into cute planters and vases.
