A celebration of new life! Baby showers as we know them started in the
US during the late 40s and have transitioned across the globe to become the
celebrations that we all know and love. Traditionally, baby showers were only held for
a first child with women being the only attendees, but as we moved into the 21st
Century this changed rapidly with men being included on the guest list and
subsequent new arrivals also being celebrated. It just makes you feel all warm and
fuzzy inside doesn’t it?
Games, food, and celebration. There are so many games that you can
plan to play at a baby shower – in fact, we even created a whole article about the topic with five fun games that you can play with as many or as few people as you
decide to invite. When it comes to refreshments, the tradition is finger food, similar to
what you’d find at an afternoon tea. If you are feeling particularly glam, why not
splash out on a bottle of non-alcoholic bubbly so that mum-to-be can join in the
This really depends on a couple of factors: the venue and the time of
year. The mum-to-be might want a casual baby shower at home with friends – in that
case a simple top and jeans combo would work perfectly, we might be biased but a
top from our Harbour Collection is understated and classy, ideal for a baby shower.
If you’re going out somewhere and the weather is dry, a dress is a comfortable
statement that is sure to fit in with the venue and rest of the baby shower guest list.
Pair with sandals or heels depending on your preference.
If you’ve been given the exciting task of organising your friend or family
member’s baby shower, then we’ve come up with this helpful planner of everything
that you might need to think about or buy. However, if you are short for time, here are
just a few things you might want to purchase:• Balloons, bunting and other
decorations• Flowers• Invitations• Food including any cakes• Ribbon (if you
decide to play “guess the bump”)• Party favours
We think that you can have a baby shower whenever you feel the time is
right. Tradition dictates that it is normally held around six weeks before the baby’s
due date, however, there’s nothing wrong with deciding to wait until after the baby is
born and is happy and healthy. It is completely up to mum and those organising.
If gifts are on the cards, there are so many different things you can buy,
whether that be something for mum, nursery, or something for the baby. If you are the
organiser, think about setting a gifting spend limit so expectations are set early on
what the maximum amount people should be spending is.With the introduction of
our Friends of Joules, we have more brilliant gift ideas than ever, so feast your eyes
on our gorgeous collection of New Baby Gifts before you make that all-important
decision. Ooohs and aaahs at the ready!
The guest list can be an organiser’s worst nightmare but work with the
mum-to-be on who should and should not be invited to the baby shower. As we
mentioned earlier, it used to be tradition for only women to attend, but more and
more often, men are being included on guest lists too. Do you want the
grandparents to attend? How many people does your venue realistically hold? Can
your budget stretch to feeding everyone you want to invite? These are the questions
that you need to ask during the planning phase.
