HOW TO THROW A SIX NATIONS RUGBY PARTY

With the Six Nations coming up and rugby fans everywhere getting ready to ramp up the excitement, what better excuse to hold a Six Nations party for all the family? With finger food, fun and games and handmade decorations to get you all into the spirit, even those that don’t know their scrum from their stand-off will have a good time!

_____________

THE FOOD – SCRUMMY SIX NATIONS BUFFET

The best party food is quick and easy to prepare, and quick and easy to eat too! To celebrate the six nations coming together for one of the biggest rugby tournaments of the year, this buffet menu has a different item from each of the six countries competing. Not only do they all taste delicious, but little ones will love learning about the different cultures and flavours (don’t worry, there’s nothing picky eaters won’t like!).

England – Fish Fingers and Chips

Italy — Mini Pizzas

Wales — Welsh Rarebit

Ireland — Colcannon

France — Macarons

Scotland — Tunnock’s Tea Cakes

THE TREATS — GINGERBREAD TEAMMATES

If you don’t mind messy fingers (and everything else for that matter!), decorating mini gingerbread men is a great way to get excited about the match to come, and you’ll have something to nibble while you’re cheering on your team. You can make your own gingerbread, or if you’re pushed for time you can simply buy them ready-made and decorate them with glace icing. Feeling particularly artistic? Try to create each team’s badge with icing and a cocktail stick!

THE DECORATIONS — RUGBY BALL BUNTING

This bunting is really easy to make, and you can store it away for the next big rugby match! Or, if you have a little fanatic in your house, you can hang it up as a decoration in their bedroom too.

Materials

Brown card or paper (not from a roll as this will curl up)

Scissors

White yarn

One-hole punch

Plastic darning needle

Method

01. Draw or print out the shape of a rugby ball onto one sheet of paper. You can make it as big as you like, but about the size of a hand is best. Cut out the shape and use as your template.

02. Use your template to cut out ten rugby balls from the brown paper.

03. You’ll need to punch ten holes into each paper rugby ball — just follow the guide below, which you can draw onto your template if you like.

04. Cut a piece of yarn about 15cm long, and tape it well to the top of your first paper cut-out.

05. Thread your darning needle and weave your yarn through the holes (ignoring the two at the very top) from bottom to top, then right to left. Try not to tug or you’ll loosen the tape.

06. Cut the yarn and tape the end to the back of the paper. Make sure the taped bits are both on the back of the ball where you can’t see them.

07. Repeat on all ten of the paper shapes, then thread them all onto the ribbon using the top holes.

FUN & GAMES — RUGBY IN THE ROUND

This game is guaranteed to get everybody laughing before the game starts, and all you need is a rugby ball and a bit of space. Start off with everybody in a circle — the aim of the game is to pass the rugby ball from one person to the next without using your hands or your feet. That means either tucked under your arm, between your wrists or between your knees! If you drop the ball, you’re out of the game. When there are only two people left, the first person has to throw the ball between their knees to the other player — if they catch it, they win, and if they don’t the other player wins!
