Crisp air, a kaleidoscope of colourful leaves and nature’s bounty awaiting hedgerow plunderers – is there anything more uplifting than an autumn walk? Our team have handpicked their favourite spots for a stroll with friends, ramble with the family or walk with the dog.
“Holkham Beach is my favourite place for an autumn walk – being able to get into all of your winter cosies early and be met by the bracing sea breeze that always finds you on those vast sands. A hot choc from a flask in the dunes is a post walk bonus – if I’m organised!”

“The array of vibrant colours and impressive selection of over 18,000 trees here never cease to amaze me. On a bright autumn day, the sun streaming through the leaves, this park feels other-worldly. My son took his first tottering steps here, so it will always have a special place in my heart. Now when we visit, he tears around finding the many child-friendly hiding places and discovering fun facts about the natural world.”

“I absolutely love autumn walks at Dovedale in the Peak District. It’s one of those places where you can tick lots of beautiful things off in under 10 miles: steep climbs for breathtaking views, long winding paths along the river with plenty of stops for paddling tired feet, and caves set back in steep cliffs. I always feel like I’ve gone back in time and a horse and cart is going to come rumbling along the path.”

“Being from North Shields near Newcastle you can’t beat a walk on the seafront at Tynemouth and along Longsands Beach. If you’re feeling energetic and face the multitude of cliff stairs down to King Edwards Bay (locally known as King Eddie’s Bay) there’s Riley’s Fish Shack, selling fresh local sea food or fish and chips, of course complete with amazing views of the craggy cliffs and Tynemouth Castle & Priory.”
“Compton Verney, Warwickshire, is one of my MOST favourite places to visit in the UK (and it’s just round the corner from house, luckily)! There are acres of unspoilt parkland and incredible views of the English countryside to enjoy, coupled with stunning landscape architecture by Capability Brown. It’s got the ability to be inspiring, uplifting and calming all at once. A total all-round family favourite!”
“The landscape is simply stunning; it almost feels like stepping back in time at these incredible rocks. It is an awesome place for a picnic, or a flask of hot chocolate perched high on one of the rocks and looking out over the landscape. It’s the sort of walk that works for everyone - my parents love it, as there is a café for a cuppa and a cake. My son loves it, as there are countless opportunities to scrabble up the rocks or leap between them. There is a tarmac path, which is great for a buggies or wheelchairs, and the views are soul-affirming.”

“This is my favourite place to go for an autumnal walk, as it is so beautiful and scenic and there are so many different routes to take. There’s fun for all the family, whether you want to climb the hills and take in the views or test your balance and bravery across the stepping-stones (they are scarier than they look!)”
“Minsmere is a beautiful nature reserve on the Suffolk coast that’s protected by the RSPB. As an amateur birdwatcher myself, I love exploring the wetlands and woodlands for a glimpse at some of the UK’s rarest birds and wildlife. There are lots of different trails to follow through the reserve, and the best thing is that you never know what you’re going to come across while you’re there, whether it’s an otter swimming through the reedbeds or an avocet dipping for insects. There’s also a lovely visitor’s centre and café where you can sit back, relax and reflect on your walk with a good cup of coffee. What’s not to love?”
